Non Invasive Ventilation (NIV) is used in patients who have hypercapnic respiratory failure, a low oxygen level and a high carbon dioxide level. The aetiology of this problem is either failing lungs such as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), weak breathing muscles (Neuromuscular disorders and COPD) or restriction to effective chest expansion (Obesity and Kypho scoliosis). Adult patients requiring home NIV include those with end stage hypercapnic COPD, patients with Obesity Hypoventilation Syndrome and those with neuromuscular/musculoskeletal disorders affecting their respiratory function, such as severe kypho-scoliosis and Motor Neurone Disease (MND).
