Support agreed for Fitzalan Medical Group

Wednesday 24th October, 2018

Fitzalan Medical Group remains in special measures following a further inspection from the Care Quality Commission.

The follow up visit followed the CQC's original review in December last year and the report that was published in March this year.

The practice team are incredibly disappointed at the review, but are committed to the care they are providing to patients, and we can assure everyone that both of their surgeries remain open.

The local NHS is very sorry for any concern caused to patients – either from the report or the media coverage – but we can assure that the practice is committed to improving the way they work as a practice and to getting Fitzalan Medical Group out of special measures.

Support for Fitzalan Medical Group

As a result of the second inspection and CQC report, the CCG has agreed a support package to provide expert clinical leadership to the team at Fitzalan Medical Group as a matter of priority.

We have agreed with our local GP Federation, Innovations in Primary Care, support for six months to work alongside the practice team to provide specialist help and advice to make their necessary improvements.

IPC is a not for profit GP Federation, made up of all the CCG practices with more than 13 years’ experience; a robust and experienced Board and over 40 staff, and a proven track record of supporting general practice.

The support that has been agreed with IPC includes:

  • An experienced GP who will join the Partnership (subject to the regulations) to ensure leadership;
  • An expert clinical leadership team;
  • An experienced Practice Manager;
  • And appropriate backfill to allow the practice to implement the required changes.

The purpose of their support will be to:

  • Ensure robust, sustainable, leadership;
  • Ensure the Practice is CQC compliant;
  • Ensure appropriate access for patients;
  • Ensure the Practice is financially viable;
  • Ensure there are robust plans for sustainability.

Clearly there is much work to do but we are confident that the expertise from IPC will support the Fitzalan team to be able to make the necessary improvements and provide assurance to the CQC of their ability to operate.

The CCG’s team will be routinely monitoring their progress and we have agreed key performance indicators with Fitzalan and IPC in order to measure the pace at which they are making improvements.
