Evening and weekend appointments available over the festivities

Wednesday 19th December, 2018

On 01 October 2018, GP and nurse appointments during the evening and at the weekend went live across Coastal West Sussex.

This has meant that people have been able to book urgent appointments up to 8pm during the week and appointments at clinics on a Saturday and Sunday.

The service is run by Innovations in Primary Care (IPC), a not-for-profit company owned by local GP practices.

The appointments are available by contacting your normal GP practice in the normal way and are available at local GP access hubs, which are being run from some local GP surgeries across the area.

Since the start of October the new service has offered an additional 10,407 appointments to people across Coastal West Sussex.

Of those appointments offered, more than 9000 appointments have been used by local people.

The main aim of these new appointments is to improve access to GP and nurse appointments and help people to get the help and support they need.

Over Christmas and New Year appointments will be available, including on the Bank Holidays, to help people to see a health professional when they need help urgently.

GP practices will be able to book into the appointments during their normal opening hours, and when they are closed NHS 111 and the out of hours service will also be able to see what is available.

The appointments are for new illnesses or injuries when you need to see a health professional urgently.

The access hubs also offer planned appointments such as family planning and cervical smear tests that can be hard to arrange whilst at work or when you are caring for family or a loved one.

At this time of the year these additional appointments are really important as they can help people to be seen by a GP or nurse when it is appropriate and reduce pressure on other services such as A&E.

The local NHS is asking everyone to remember these appointments when you do need medical help this Christmas and New Year, and ask your GP practice about what’s available if you do need help.
