Primary and urgent care survey - preference to see own doctor

To establish how important it was to see the same GP continuity of seeing the same GP, we asked patients in four different scenarios whether they would prefer to see their own GP or to see a different GP more quickly.

Preference to see own doctor in different scenarios (percentages)

For most people this showed a clear pattern of people preferring to see the same GP for a long term condition but being happy to see a new GP more quickly for a new illness such as a cough or back pain.

People were more divided about a mental health problem.

This varies with age, with a higher proportion of older people, those with physical disabilities, higher users of services and people with long term conditions, preferring to see their own GP.
