West Sussex Safeguarding Children Board

The core objectives of the West Sussex Safeguarding Children Board (WSSCB) are set out in s.14(1) of the Children Act 2004 and are as follows:

  • To co-ordinate what is done by each person or body represented on the Board for the purposes of safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children in the area of the authority
  • To ensure the effectiveness of what is done by each such person or body for that purpose
  • The functions of the WSSCB, as set out in legislation, are to consider:
  • Policies and procedures covering a range of issues relating to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children
  • Communicate and raise awareness about safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children
  • Monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of safeguarding arrangements
  • Participating in planning and commissioning to ensure safeguarding and promoting children’s welfare is taken into account
  • Consider all child deaths in the local area
  • Undertake serious case reviews when appropriate
  • Other activities as necessary

The West Sussex Safeguarding Children Board seeks to work with parents, carers and others who may be involved.

This collaboration is crucially dependent on full communication and a shared understanding between agencies, professionals and families.

The Sussex child protection and safeguarding procedures can be found at the Pan Sussex Child Protection & Safeguarding Procedures websites.

Membership of the Board, and more information on the work of the WSSCB, can also be found on the WSSCB website.
